4 Tips to Help your Carpet last Longer

4 Tips to Help your Carpet last longer

Okay you just bought new carpet and you want to make it last as long as possible.  What do you do?

Here are 4 easy things that you can do to prolong the life your carpet.

1.  Have everyone take off their shoes.  Not only will you be able to keep all the junk from outside off your carpet, but you will also be able to enjoy the cushy feeling under your feet.

2.Vacuum regularly and if it is a heppa vacuum all the better because you will keep the dust out of the indoor air.  If you want to find out if your vacuum is putting dust into the air try the following.  Turn out the lights at night and vacuum.  Not only will your spouse and  kids think you have lost it, but if you shine a flash light above the vacuum you will be able to see if their is any dust floating in the air. If you see dust you might want to invest in a good Hepa Vacuum.

3. Clean up spills quickly.  Put up a sign that all people under 3 feet tall have to eat and drink in the kitchen.

4. Find a good carpet cleaner and have your carpets steam cleaned and protected on a regular basis.  Carpet Manufacturers require that carpets be steam cleaned every 18 months to keep the warranty in effect.  You might want to do it every 6 months or at least once a year depending on the traffic in your house. If you need help in finding a qualified carpet cleaner check out our Consumer Guide to Carpet Cleaning.

Follow these simple steps and enjoy your carpet for many years to come.

Removing Red Wine from Carpet

Removing Red Wine Stain

It’s a Friday evening and you have everything planned for a romantic evening dinner with your hubby at home. Kids are at grandmas and the house is scary quite.  The table is set with your best dishes and silverware along with your fine crystal wine glasses.

He comes home and is surprised how quite the house is and then notices the dinner table.  Well after a shower he joins you for an amazing dinner along with delicious red wine.  No TV tonight, he heads for the sofa and nods for you to join him, but first he fills up his glass with more wine.  As he smoothly moves across the white carpet to snuggly with you on the sofa OUT OF NOWHERE ,Speedy the cat, darts across the Living Room floor right between your legs, no longer a smooth moving Casanova now you’re flying through the air with red wine in fine china and all you can think about is that mood is all but dead and hopefully you won’t be and as you hit the floor Red Wine goes everywhere.  Your wife at this moment wishes she had a video camera and is almost in tears laughing because she knows you are an expert carpet cleaner and the night is not ruined as long as you can still walk.

You get up slowly and see Red Wine on your beautiful carpet and you tell her, honey I will use my special mixture to remove it tomorrow, but for now let me refill my unbroken fine china and we’ll turn the lights lower so we don’t have to look at red wine on the carpet.

1 So it’s tomorrow and you mix together half  hydrogen peroxide and half dish detergent ( like dawn)
2 Spray or dab the mixture on the stain ( but first you test the mixture in the corner to make sure it doesn’t bleach the carpet, in most cases your fine except on some colored fabrics)
3 The stain should disappear before your eyes.
4 If you have a wet dry vac try rinsing the carpet with water in a spray bottle and then sucking it up the wet dry vac.
5 Put a fan on the area to help speed dry it.

Removing Gum from Carpet

You just had brand new carpet installed and absolutely love it, you take off your

shoes and love to walk bare foot on your new lush carpet. You leave signs all over

to take your shoes off and no eating or drinking on the carpet.

Later on that evening you find green colored chewing gum right in the middle of the carpet.  After you

recover from your fainting spell and realize it’s not a bad dream, you go looking for

for the little 6 year old chewer with a faulty mouth.  But right before you become a

mad crazed yelling mother you realize it was just an accident and head for the goo

gone (you can buy at your local grocery store) apply a little to a rag and gently rub t

he gum spot until the gum comes up.  Then you get a little water with a couple of

drops of dish detergent in it apply it to a rag to remove the oily residue from the goo

Wahla  everything is fine with your new carpet and you now all you

have to do is figure out how to fix the hole in in your little 6 years old mouth ( where

the gum comes out)

The Top 4 Common Household Spots & Spills…

The Top 4 Common Household Spots & Spills…
And How To Remove Them Without Calling A Professional!

Hello friends and clients! Time and again my phone rings and a desperate homeowner is on the other end in search of advice for removing one kind of spot or another from their carpet. Now I am more than happy to accommodate these phone calls, but believe it or not I can’t answer my phone 24/7. So wouldn’t you like a little “go to” instruction sheet to keep handy? Now when your guest spills his/her glass of Merlot on your carpet at 11 pm on a Saturday night you can still know what to do!

Before I Start Please Keep These 3 Things In Mind:

1st Don’t Use Over The Counter Carpet Spotters. Those store bought cleaners tend to leave a residue of detergent that becomes gummy and attracts dirt and soil. But, if you insist on using one please use a very small amount, I’ve seen that stuff turn carpet spots into “dirt magnets” instantly.

2nd Always Rinse thoroughly WITHOUT Over Wetting. (i.e. have lots of clean, dry, absorbent towels handy.) It’s a fine balance between rinsing and not over wetting/potentially damaging your carpet.

3rd Never, Never Rub or Scrub Carpet – rubbing simply damages the carpet fibers.

The Top 4 Common Spills & Spots And How To Remove Them:

Spot #1 Food: It doesn’t matter if it is chocolate, spaghetti sauce or blueberry pie. This is how to remove any food spill from your carpet. First pick up all the food, if it’s an older spill, gently scrape all the dried food off the surface of the carpet. Next, put a bit of your hand washing dish detergent into a spray bottle filled with HOT tap water. (Approx 2 drops of detergent to 2 Cups of water.) Then spray (don’t soak) the area and proceed to blot (don’t rub). Use a clean, white, absorbent towel (nothing that could bleed/transfer color). Continue this action of spraying and blotting until your desired results are reached.

Spot #2 Wine: Merlot, Chardonnay, Cab, or Blush? It doesn’t matter what kind of wine, what matters is how you take care of that spot or spill. First, blot and absorb up as much of the spill as you can. Next, get your hand dish washing detergent solution (see above) and mix 1 part of this solution to 2 parts hydrogen peroxide. Thoroughly spray the spill (without over wetting) then place a piece of plastic wrap over the area so the hydrogen peroxide solution can have a chance to do its job. Let it sit like that for approximately 2 hours. Next, remove the plastic and go through the rinse/blot routine until the spot is rinsed clean.

Spot #3 Candle Wax: Many people love to burn candles in the home. They make the home smell good and give a warm inviting atmosphere, but when a hot candle gets knocked over that wax makes for a very tricky spot to clean. First of all, if the spot is fresh, blot up as much of the wax as you can. If it’s an older spot, scrape off as much as you can without doing any damage to the fibers of your carpet. Next, grab your iron and some clean, absorbent towels. WARNING: Your carpet fibers can melt or burn so be careful – do NOT set the hot part of the iron directly on your carpet. Now keep the iron on the lowest possible setting to melt the wax. Always keep a dry towel between the iron and your carpet. Keep repositioning the towel to a clean spot to keep that wax transferring from the carpet to the towel. If there is still color on the carpet from the wax – you are probably going to need to call me out. I don’t recommend homeowners put solvents on the carpet, please leave that to your carpet pro. I’ve seen too many people destroy the backing of their carpet with solvents.

Spot #4 Urine: This is probably the #1 call I get. If the spot is fresh, cover the area with baking soda (synthetic fibers only) and let the area dry completely. Then vacuum it up. The baking soda pulls the stain out and works amazingly. If the spot is older and already dry, use the same method described for removing the wine.

So there you have it. Keep this handy so when you get a spot or spill you know just what to do. In the meantime…
